Crafting Light, Telling Stories: A Reflection on Milan Design Week 2025
May 1, 2025
Milan Design Week is always a spectacle — a whirlwind of ideas, forms, and provocations. But this year, for me, it was about light. Not just lighting, but light as experience. Light as emotion. Light as the difference between a house and a home. We often speak about lighting in practical terms — the fixtures, the placement, the technical specs. But in Milan, I saw lighting as poetry. Statement pieces that don't just illuminate a room — they change it. One piece, a pendant collaboration between Flos and Piet Boon, stole my heart. It’s sculptural and soft, directional and delicate — and entirely adaptable to your mood. I’m determined to place it in one of our future projects at Nellis Architecture.
The Global Direction: What We’re Bringing Home
Globally, the design world is pushing boundaries with bold pieces, rich textures, and risk-taking combinations. In contrast, many high-end Dubai interiors still play it safe — timeless, neutral, minimal. At Nellis Architecture, I see an opportunity to shift this. Our clients trust us for beautifully crafted spaces, and part of that trust can include gently pushing the envelope. Imagine a serene, contemporary villa… and then introducing one unexpected piece: a striking chandelier, a rare material, or a bespoke art installation. Just enough to create that unforgettable “where did you find this?” moment. Design doesn’t have to shout — but it should speak.
A Missed Beat: When Originality Is Lost
Of course, not every moment in Milan dazzled. As a lover of furniture (especially chairs — I’m obsessed), I was hoping to be blown away. But what I saw too often were repetitions of Minotti’s greatest hits. Beautiful, yes. But original? Not really. This mirrored a wider concern I’ve had in both architecture and interiors: globalisation can flatten creativity. We’re seeing the same shapes, materials, and palettes from Morocco to Milan to Muscat. When we copy too much, we forget where we are. We forget that design should respond — to place, to culture, to people.
What We’re Fighting For at Nellis Architecture
At Nellis Architecture, we’re building foundations clients can rely on, then layering in details that surprise, delight, and shift the ordinary.
I believe in homes that tell stories. Homes that glow in ways you didn’t expect. Homes that take risks — gently, intentionally, beautifully.
Milan reminded me of the power of those details. And I can’t wait to bring them home.
